CJ’s Dream of Books, Bricks, and Big Smiles
For 16-year-old CJ, his Dream was all about enjoying a day doing the things he loves most. His shopping spree took him to the LEGO Store, Target, Barnes & Noble, BoxLunch, and more, giving him the freedom to explore, choose his favorites, and enjoy a special day centered entirely around him.
As someone who isn’t a big traveler, this Dream offered CJ the perfect opportunity to get out, have fun, and experience something different from his usual routine.

One of CJ’s favorite stops was Barnes & Noble, where he could pick out books of his own choosing. An avid reader, CJ especially loves manga, Japanese comic books that are read from back to front. Normally, he has a one or two book limit, but his Dream gave him the freedom to choose the stories he wanted. Manga is also something special he shares with his sister, making the books even more meaningful.
The LEGO Store was another highlight. The store went out of their way to make CJ feel special, personally showing him around the different categories and making sure he had the chance to see everything. CJ’s Grandma appreciated the time and attention the employee gave him, helping turn a shopping trip into a memorable experience.
But the Dream was about much more than shopping. For CJ and his family, it was a chance to enjoy something they had missed for a long time, a normal day together.

For the first time in three years, CJ was able to spend a day out that wasn’t centered around medical appointments or treatment. He could take his time, make his own choices, and simply enjoy being a teenager. Even lunch was all about him, with CJ & his sister choosing sushi while his grandma enjoyed her own favorite.
One particularly meaningful part of the day for Grandma was watching CJ push his own wheelchair around. His grandma shared how much of a difference it made, giving him a boost of confidence and helping him feel that he could do more on his own.
Reflecting on the experience, his grandma shared, “We got to have a normal day. Away from the house, first time in THREE YEARS he has been out not medical.” The family also appreciated their driver, who made the day even more enjoyable with wonderful service.
CJ’s Dream was a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful experiences are the ones that let a kid simply be a kid. For CJ, it was a day filled with books, LEGO, favorite finds, family time, and a renewed sense of confidence.
Toby’s Dream is grateful for Chartway Promise Foundation as our funding partner in helping us make this dream come true.
